The Rule of Five: The Building Blocks of a Leader’s Daily Routine

It’s funny how things change! In this post from October 12th, 2010, I mention going to an LTD Leadership convention. I imagine it was either in Kansas City, MO or Louisville, KY. I’ll tell you, I loved being a part of that group! I was motivation junkie. I was sucking it all in and had been for 4 years straight at that point. It had been over a year since I had graduated, but I had little to show for it – in fact, this was when I was just about to start teaching at Ivy Tech.

At that point, who would have guessed that I would soon become a John Maxwell Team member?

Woah. Life is truly amazing in its twists and turns.

Anyhow, I wanted to share this post after last week’s 100th session of the AoL Podcast. One of the things that I mentioned is that John has this Rule of Five when it comes to learning and filing those things away. Well, as you’ll read below, those 5 steps have helped him write numerous books over the years. However, this does come at a cost – he calls his regular life pretty boring!

I can relate. That’s why I don’t really use social media to share what I’m up to. Because most of the time it’s spent in front of a computer creating content!!

What a Great Weekend!

Over the weekend I went to an LTD leadership conference – Summit 2010. As usual, the quality of the speakers was great. The two keynote speakers completely blew my mind: Frank Luntz and John C. Maxwell. For those of you who don’t know, Frank is a pollster that has probably been on every prime time and morning news show imaginable. And Dr. Maxwell, well – let’s just call him the guru of leadership. He’s someone that I’ve learned quite a bit from in the last couple of years through my grad work and LTD itself.

One of the things that I share with you guys today was something John pointed out that he does on a daily basis that I thought was really noteworthy. Doing this little thing has lead him to write over 50 books over his career and still gives him more to share. This little thing is called the “Rule of Five”.

Essentially the Rule of Five is a habit you start that consists of 5 different actions that lead you to your goals/dreams. For example, Dr. Maxwell wanted to become an in-demand writer and motivational speaker. Of course, there are multiple ways to do this, but since he’s a great writer, he thought that it’d be better for him to go in as a writer.

Rule of Five:

So, his five things that he does to achieve this are:

  1. Read
  2. File
  3. Think
  4. Ask questions
  5. Write

Doesn’t seem too bad, does it?

Well, there’s a catch. You have to do this everyday. No excuses. Do you want to be a novelist? You will write every day. Do you want to be an painter? You will paint everyday! Simple, right?

As part of his presentation, he said, “your success is determined by your daily agenda.” This is so true, because it is! To accomplish you have to be productive! However, he worked intelligently. You hear so much about people being busy all the time and not successfully going anywhere – it’s typically because they’re not focused in their work.

And since he was there talking about his writing, you can see that he was successful in what he set out to do!

John wasn’t born rich. He didn’t attend a prestigious school or grow up with children of people in power. He got to where he is by doing.

So. Five things a day, everyday. That’s all it takes to fulfill your dream.

Just a note to add here. Since starting work on New Inceptions full time, I started implementing my own Rule of Five. While I started from his, mine varies slightly due to the different content pieces that I’ll make in a given week.

For creating content, mine are:

  1. Explore – Find out what’s going on in the world around me and in the online entrepreneurial/creative industry.
  2. Study – Are there any interesting crossings of the two worlds? What does it mean and how does it apply?
  3. Connect the Dots – Ask those questions! Who needs to know this information? Is this something I need to bring up in future content?
  4. Take Action – Synthesize new content, share, and help others where needed.
  5. Reflect – Ask myself, “Did that have the desired effect I was looking for? What could I have done better?”

Action Steps:

Jobs Without Borders: How TravelGig.co is Making it Easier to Work and Travel with John Asbury (AoL 097)


Many people aren’t necessarily ready to take the entrepreneurial plunge. For them security of a regular payday is much more valuable than living terms their own way.

There’s nothing wrong with that – it’s just not for me nor most of the guests on this show. I personally know that I suck being told what to do and, especially, how to do it.

However, that doesn’t mean that they can’t do some of the things us lifestyle entrepreneurs do.

4 Important Beliefs a Digital Marketing Strategist Has About Their Craft

For those of us who are actively trying to figure out how to get our work out into the world, we know that the way to do that is through digital marketing.

Digital marketing simply means building awareness of what you’re doing through internet.

Nothing more.

You’re not asking for a sale – you’re just simply building awareness.

Marketing is not sales.

Let me repeat that.

Marketing is not sales.

As you probably know, digital marketing is all about creating content. For example, this post is a form of digital marketing because you, the reader, get to see what I know as the writer.

But, as you know, there’s good and bad ways to approach digital marketing.

In this post, I’ll be sharing with you what I’ve learned about digital marketing and how you should approach it. That way you can become the next awesome digital marketing strategist.

 

“Buy Here” Digital Marketing Doesn’t Work

The way that digital marketing is today, there’s a lot of noise out there. There’s a lot of companies that simply are using their blog, their website, or their social media accounts to shout “buy here!!!”.

It’s understandable. I mean, take Twitter for example. You really can’t fit complex thoughts, messages, and meaningful conversations into 140 characters at a time.

Perhaps you can chain a few messages together on there, but doesn’t that kind of defeat the purpose?

Then, you look at Facebook. A whole nother beast in itself.

The Facebook algorithm basically decides what you’re going to see based on what you’ve liked in the past.

Because of that, you are segregated into a different silo and echo chamber on there than say, your best friend. (Maria’s feed is hugely different than mine.)

It’s kind of like that anywhere you look online these days. Every person is split into a silo of content which is tailored to them.

If you have no idea what you’re doing in marketing via social media, it totally makes sense why it would seem that sending out a message of “BUY HERE!” is the best way to get people’s attention. It’s to the point and it seems like what most marketers are doing to cut through the walls and clutter.

But it isn’t.

Why is that?

 

1. Digital Marketing Should Be Considered an Art (Because It Is)

Personally I like using platforms that aren’t all up in your face. While there’s a lot of video online these days, I can’t say that I personally pay attention to everything that comes across my newsfeed. In fact, I’ve always had this feeling that if I’m forced content too rapidly, I might choose to ignore it all together.

Personally, I’ve always been more of a fan of evergreen content. This includes movies that stand up to time. I’ve been a fan of TV shows that people actually put time and production into. I guess that’s one of the reason why I’ve been a fan of Star Trek vs say any given reality show.

Heck, even when it comes to video games – I’m so much more about quality than quantity.

I could care less about today’s Candy Crush. Give me a good RTS like Halo Wars and I’ll play that for 8 years straight (which I have).

This being the case, I know that not everyone likes what I like. Just like we’re drawn to different types of content, there’s a good chance that we’re all drawn to different kinds of marketing.

So, let me ask you, does your digital marketing express your preferred content? If not, why doesn’t it? It’s your art after all!

2. Great Digital Marketing Is Inspiring

Because of my tastes, I have a certain expectation of what good is.

As a creator, there’s a point in your own development where your ability doesn’t necessarily meet your tastes.

Ira Glass calls this The Gap:

If that video doesn’t inspire you as a creator, then I don’t know what will.

And truth be told, it makes a great piece of marketing. My first question that I asked when seeing this video was “Who is Ira Glass?”.

This speech and this video, are pieces of marketing for Ira Glass as well as the artist that made the video – Daniel Sax. You realize that Ira is the man behind the words, but Daniel is actually pretty good at what he does as well!

So, question 2: does your digital marketing inspire others? Remember, it doesn’t have to be as in depth as this video – it can be as simple as quote images in Instagram.

 

3. Your Digital Marketing (Your Art) Needs to Create Raving Fans

There’s a lot of people that want to impact as many people as they can with their work.

You might hear people say they want to inspire millions of people. Get millions of views on YouTube. That’s great for a metric, or if you’re an entertainer, I suppose.

But if you’re wanting to really make an impact on people, then I’m not sure how you’re really going to be able to do that yourself – unless you have a an army that will help you.

I’ve heard that 1000 True Fans is the secret.

But even 1000 fans seems like a huge number. How do you tackle that?

By impacting 10, 20, 100 on your own. Those people will then go out and help you build that army for you.

And at a personal level, I’m not interested in getting myself out to millions of people on a superficial shallow basis.

If I can personally impact a couple hundred if not a couple thousand folks, I’m totally up for that.

How about you? Does your media marketing have a deep impact with just a few people? Are you creating it just for them or are you creating it for everyone?

If you’re creating it for everyone, maybe you might have better results if you focused on just a handful of folks?

 

4. Your Digital Marketing Should be About Monetization

Again, there’s a lot of ways that we can all screw up our content. We can screw up on all the above. But if we’re going to make a living on our work, our marketing needs to be about monetization too.

I mean, you can go hungry while delivering your message if you want – but why if people are willing to help you foot the bill to keep creating?

What exactly does that mean if we can’t say “BUY HERE!!” in our messaging?

Well, it simply means that you have to know how to get people into your sales funnels.

You have to learn how to move them away from Facebook or Twitter to your site – to get their email, to give them value (for free) and eventually give them the opportunity to buy from you.

If they’re not ready yet, no big deal, if they like your stuff enough, they’ll eventually find a way to give you value in some way – even if it’s simply telling other people about you!

 

Action Steps

So now that you have these 4 ways of building better content and hopefully better fans, I’d be interested to hear if any of it sounds like it’s something you’ve been missing out on.

A Tiny Shift In Perspective Can Get You Anything You Want

We live in a time where we’re kind of made to believe that everyone has an agenda. Everyone is out to get something. That all actions that a person takes is to further that particular agenda.

Is that really the case, though?

By watching the political pundits or just the evening news, you’d think that everyone is constantly writing their own future. They’re checking and rechecking their actions to see if it will yield what they’re looking to get.

For the most part, this makes sense.

You should have a plan for what you’re wanting to achieve.

However, there’s one thing that I’ve learned in the last few years that I think will benefit you guys greatly.

Don’t use people as tools to get where you want to get.

Karma Is Real

I’m sure you’ve been in a place where you’ve realized the very fact that karma does indeed exist. What goes around does, in fact, come around. Even if it’s not exactly on the time frame that we’d want it to.

Just this past weekend, Maria had a drill weekend with her new National Guard unit. Due to her rank, she’s in charge of several people. One of her subordinates, who’s originally from the unit, is well, not one of the nicest guys.

He’s definitely the type that has his own plan and from what I can tell, uses others to get what he wants. Whether it’s through having them do stuff for him or tearing them down, he uses other people as tools.

Well, to make a long story short, Maria knows that he has a grudge against her because when she was promoted from her old unit, she ended up taking the spot that he thought he was going to get. So he tries to make her look bad regularly.

This weekend, she came to learn that she was going to have to take her physical training (PT) exam again because somehow she had low scores from her last assessment – technically meaning that she failed her last one.

She’s never failed a PT test before. And even if she would, it wouldn’t be because of what she was failed on.

Guess who was in charge of the assessment? That’s right, her subordinate.

And, guess who eagerly jumped at the opportunity to lead the PT exams this past weekend?

Yup, again, her soldier.

Luckily for her, she didn’t need to retest this weekend. She’ll have another go soon. No problem.

And as far her soldier, there was a promotion ceremony this weekend as well. And another soldier who had the same rank as Maria’s actually was promoted to the next position instead of  her soldier. He really believed that he was going to get it.

As reality was setting in, Maria said you could just see him getting redder and redder while they were in formation.

 

Karma is real.

 

Scarcity vs Abundance

So why was it that Maria and her soldier are in the different positions that they find themselves?

Sure, both of them have to take classes to be eligible to be promoted. Which means they both have to plan and sacrifice to take those classes. So they’re both putting in the work to get it done.

But the difference is  Maria approaches the situation with a perception of abundance, while her soldier approached the situation with a scarcity viewpoint.

Sure, there’s only so many positions available, so technically you could see it as a competition. But, because she works her own tail off to get in those places without tearing down other people, that’s why she made the position before he did.

She got the position by adding value to her previous unit, not by asking “how can I use others to get what I want?”.

In other words, even though it’s easier to knock down others in attempt to get what you want, the real winners are those that build themselves up.

Put in the extra work.

That crap doesn’t fly in the military.

I know, first hand, it doesn’t work too well in academia. And it certainly doesn’t fly for long in the entrepreneurial world.

I’ve gotten so many more good relationships through building New Inceptions than anything I’ve done in the past because I’ve used it as a springboard to help other people.

Whether it’s their first podcast that they’ve ever been a guest for, or it’s the first time they’ve ever been a host, helping people and not expecting anything in return has been very rewarding in getting to where I am currently.

Action Steps

The next time you’re forced to make a decision about doing the hard work, going out of your way to help someone, or doing the easy thing and undermining someone else, remember this.

Society makes it seem like the only way someone can get ahead is by using others as tools to get to where you want to go. Especially if you’re a sports fan. There’s always going to be a loser.

The truth is, though, is that there’s enough to go around for everyone. The more you help other people, the more you automatically get in return.

Heck, you might even go on an adventure in the process!!
