entrepreneurial mindset

Joe Trodden – Dissecting the Entrepreneurial Mindset – Why It Takes More than a Visionary to Achieve Great Things (AoL 172)

When it comes to the entrepreneurial mindset, most of the time we hear topics that the new business owner needs to know. It’s great to know that there’s so much support for folks new to the game. In fact, people like my unofficial mentor Pat Flynn and the crew over at Fizzle have made decent livings on helping these folks. (Which I admire because it’s really hard to grow a reputation in this market segment. The market is already saturated and many folks don’t or can’t pay at this stage in the game.)

However, there is market for entrepreneurs and business owners who have had a bit of success. This is the scaling stage – the stage that Veronica, Andy, myself, and previous cohosts of the show specialize in.

And depending on how they’ve grown the business to this point, the way that they’ll continue to grow is more than likely completely different than what got them to that level of success.

In today’s chat with Joe, Veronica and I are reminded that different personalities can build a business so far. It’s when you bring other complementary personalities to the table that you can obtain true greatness.

Enjoy!

SPECIFICALLY, YOU’LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT:

  • How did Joe find himself working in the mindset space? 10:12
  • What are some of the mental blocks Joe finds himself helping entrepreneurs with? 15:57

business marketing

Devin Johnson – Automated Business Marketing the Right Way: Why Leading with Relationships is Ideal When Making Sales (AoL 171)

Business marketing online is still a bit of a mystery to many business owners. Especially when it comes to LinkedIn.

In the past, we’ve had interviews with LinkedIn marketing experts Myr Bacun and AJ Wilcox about building groups and advertising on the platform.

Those are great and cool strategies on their own, and I know they work. But it seems that whenever I go to LinkedIn, I’m always being blasted by 3 to 5 messages saying “Hey, nice to connect! Seems we know similar people. Do you need help with…?”

Have you felt that way?

As this session’s guest, Devin Johnson puts it, it’s simply not the way to do long term business. You lead with relationship first.

So in this interview, we’ll learn how Devin and his company Kennected are righting the ship when it comes to making meaningful connections online.

Enjoy!

SPECIFICALLY, YOU’LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT:

  • What were the early years like of being an entrepreneur for Devin? 11:59
  • How’d Devin eventually get into marketing? 16:22
  • How did it occur to him he could create a program to do things he found himself repeating in his marketing? 22:45
  • What are some of Devin’s do’s and don’ts when it comes to marketing? 28:28
  • If he knew what he knows now when he first started, what would he have done differently? 33:11
  • What’s on the horizon for Devin? 34:11
  • Who are his top 3 favorite influencers? 37:55
  • What’s a documentary that people should check out? 39:18
  • What is something he’s become good at saying no to? 39:58
  • Is there something under $100 that has changed Devin’s life? 42:41

economic crisis

John Miles – Virtually Assisting VA’s in Economic Crisis – How Optimate and iWorker Aid Talent in Distress (AoL 170)

With the coronavirus outbreak, working remotely is starting to become a normal trend. In fact, I’d say it’s moved the timeline up by 5 years or more until we see a lot more remote workers. However, not all virtual workers are from first world countries where being able to work remotely is considered a perk. Instead, they reside in countries where they might be in the middle of long term economic crisis. They have learned how to become virtual assistants or VA’s so that they can bring in money than they’d get paid in their home country.

To help those folks, today’s guest, John Miles, and his partners at iWorker and Optimate, have built a network of VA’s around the globe. These aren’t just any VA’s, though. They are VA’s who actually are usually more than capable to handle what us solopreneurs would throw at them. In fact, a lot of them have degrees in the work that they do.

In this interview with John, we find out why he and his partners felt they needed to start down this path and who might benefit from hiring from those in the network.

Enjoy!

SPECIFICALLY, YOU’LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT:

  • What’s John’s history in business and as an entrepreneur before starting iWorker and Optimate? 9:48
  • What are some questions people need to consider before they bring on a VA or hire locally? 23:22
  • Due to what his various brands do as social enterprises, has John considering making them B-Corp’s? 31:19
  • Which countries are iWorker and Optimate targeting in finding VAs to work with? 35:44
  • How can people support what John and his co-founders are up to without hiring a VA? 38:09
  • Is there anything exciting for John coming up in 2020? 43:30
  • Who are three influencers he follows regularly? 44:48
  • Who would be someone John would get starstruck by interviewing? 47:19
  • What new habit has recently improved his life? 47:40
  • What costs less than $100 that has changed John’s life? 48:39
  • Is there something he believed when he was 18 but doesn’t today? 49:14

ethical issues in business

Michael Ainslie – Navigating Ethical Issues in Business – Why Doing What’s Right Ultimately Makes the Difference (AoL 169)

As we grow more successful, it can be easy for power to go to our heads. We can start to think we’re unstoppable. This is especially true on the grand scale when we see ethical issues in business headline the news.

One right now, for example, is the rehabilitation of the Boeing 737 Max line of aircraft. It has turned into an epic crisis in the last couple of years for them as they simply have not done well in addressing the issue. Nor did they really do a great job of mitigating it either. Whoever made the decision to cut corners and create the software which caused a couple flights to crash, obviously shouldn’t have cut those corners.

Another example was back in 2008 when Lehman Brothers had to file for bankruptcy. Out of all the things that went on that year, I still remember watching the news as the threat of that particular crisis grew more inevitable. When it finally did, the market plummeted… as well as the savings and lifestyles of many people who thought they had done things right.

Today’s guest, Michael Ainslie, was one of the group of people that had to make the decision to file for Chapter 11. Sure, making the decision was tough, but it was the right thing to do.

Being part of that board hasn’t been his only rodeo, however. He was also the CEO of the internationally known auction house Sotheby’s. Let’s just say they had a few things they had to deal with during his time there as well.

In his new book, A Nose for Trouble, he shares with us how he’s been able keep his head through all the adversity in his career.

In this chat, Andy and I get the chance to learn a few things you won’t hear on any other interview of his!

Enjoy!

SPECIFICALLY, YOU’LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT:

  • If Michael wrote a screenplay for his life, where would the opening scene be? 9:42
  • As a first hand witness, how do highly successful board members end up in a orange jumpsuit in a prison? 14:38
  • What kind of people do these types of people hire as leadership for their companies? 16:29
  • How was Michael able to keep himself from being consumed by the power he’s had in his career? 20:38
  • How does he suggest executives balance the line between the what’s right and the needs of different stakeholders? 22:04
  • What can Xennials and younger generations of entrepreneurs learn from the mistakes of leaders who have gone before them? 27:06
  • What advice does he have to a company who’s trying to rebuild their brand and reputation if they’ve been dragged through the media? 32:38
  • What’s Michael looking forward to in 2020? 34:34
  • Who are his 3 top influencers are teachers who have helped him get to where he’s at today? 39:54
  • What’s a gift he loves to give others? 40:29

return on experience

David E. Bryant – Return on Experience and Expertise: Why Staying Humble Allows for Big Time Growth (AoL 168)

Return on Experience and Expertise, or RoEE, is something we all should realize we have. Whether you’re more street smart or climbed your way up the twin towers of formal education and the corporate world, you do have experience which can serve not only you, but those around you.

However, that said, it’s up to us to realize what expertise can truly help others. Unlike our Passion, we don’t get to choose our Purpose and where we fit with others.

However, when we can pair up our Purpose with our Passion, then we have the seeds to greatness. Add it to a unique Process, and we have a winning formula for awesome Profit!

Sound familiar? It should. I shared briefly about the 4 P’s of the Ikigai in this blog post recently.

Today’s guest, David Bryant, is a prime example of someone who’s not only found this sweet spot in his career, but also has been able to take advantage of it. How? By staying humble and learning lessons wherever or from whoever he can.

Enjoy!

marriage and family counseling

Lisa Mustard – Embracing Her Why – A Journey from Sports Marketing to Marriage and Family Counseling… and More! (AoL 167)

When it comes to marriage and family counseling, one would think that the therapist loves to do what they’re doing. Why else would they do it? It has to be a super fulfilling job in that you’re doing all this great work with couples and helping them make breakthroughs critical to the relationship’s survival.

However, just like any other health related position, working with troubled patients can take its toll. It’s so easy to take their problems home on top of the all the things that one has to cope with in their own life.

And it’s not just the health field – doing anything you love too intensely for a long time can lead to burnout.

This is certainly the truth for this session’s guest, Lisa Mustard.

And, in fact, it’s one of the reasons that she’s started her podcast, The Therapy Show.

In this chat, Veronica and I get the chance to learn how she’s been able to package up her own life experiences in two hugely different arenas into what she’s doing today. Not only that, but we also discuss the importance of self care regardless of our position.

Enjoy!

SPECIFICALLY, YOU’LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT:

  • After getting started in the sports marketing arena, how did Lisa end up as a therapist? 12:27
  • How has she been able to repackage her skill set as a therapist to being a coach? 17:45
  • Are there any similarities with her therapy patients vs those that she coaches? 22:36
  • What sparked Lisa’s interest in starting a podcast for therapists? 25:36
  • When it comes to building a new business, does Lisa think we should build on the side of our day job or build a runway first? 33:55
  • Why does it take burnout for us to realize how to be happy? 39:12
  • How does she feel like her work is helping others not fall down the stress rabbit hole? 42:37
  • What has Lisa excited for 2020? 48:58
  • What are three of Lisa’s favorite influential podcasts? 51:05
  • Which three books are her favorite to gift or tell others about? 51:38

finding your passion & purpose in life

Tommy Breedlove – Legendary By Choice: Why Finding Your Passion & Purpose in Life is the Secret to Long Term Significance (AoL 166)

I can’t tell you how many times in college I heard fellow students use the phrase “I’m going to take a nap and wait patiently for death” as a joke. And in reality, for many, life is simply something that has to be endured. However, I fully believe that finding your passion & purpose in life is a huge part of getting out of that life of quiet mediocrity.

Since college, and especially after starting this podcast, I’ve come to the realization that individuals who have this figured out have overall a lot less stress in their life. Not only that, but they usually have a higher chance of being fulfilled by the work they’re doing.

This session’s guest, Tommy Breedlove, has gone through it all. From being incarcerated early in life, to working at the C-suite level, to realizing that the more he wrote his own story, the less others controlled it. Today he helps others not only realize that fact for themselves, but helps them find their next level.

In this chat, Andy and I get the chance to learn how he made that realization for himself, how he helps other men find their own way, and some pointers we can all use to start moving the dial a little bit more today.

Enjoy!

SPECIFICALLY, YOU’LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT:

  • What kind of legacy does Tommy want to leave? 7:47
  • What was the defining moment which lead Tommy to his current path? 8:39
  • Can something be said to someone who has fallen into a contentment coma to help them get out? 17:35
  • What’s the current state of men in America, and why did he focus to work them specifically? 20:49
  • Is there a difference between boys, dudes, and men? 24:52
  • According to Tommy, how do you start finding your passion & purpose in life and build a life of legacy? 28:17
  • Does he have any recommendations for someone do to build a financial fortress and build a legacy? 32:12
  • What are 3 favorite books he likes to give or tell others about? 42:36
