build confidence

Casey Sharperson – Believe in Your Better Tomorrow – How to Build Confidence and Achieve Your Dreams (AoL 189)

As 2020 is coming quickly to an end, we’re moving closer to favorable conditions to be creatively self employed. However, that might be easier said than done. For many, the pandemic has set people back in more ways than one. If we want to build confidence going into the new year and to be a player in the Pandemic Adjusted Economy (PAE), we’ll likely need to rebuild and equip ourselves with new expectations of what’s possible.

Personally, I feel that 2020 has helped me reflect and improve my vision of what my businesses can be. In fact, we’re improving the model of everything I’m involved with. I’ve certainly learned a few lessons from this past year. More so how to build businesses that are pandemic proof!

However, I understand that not everyone has been able to gain that clarity. In fact, I think a lot of people who’ve lost their business aren’t quite sure how to pick things up to rebuild. Or, even if they’d want to. Or maybe, someone’s been waiting for the best time to start out on their own – but they’re especially not sure if NOW is the best time to get started.

Here’s the thing: everyone who was affected by COVID-19 will still have to start from a level playing ground when we’re given the greenlight to begin again.

So don’t let your fears hold you back. Reach out and find those who can be a catalyst for what you’re trying to achieve.

One such person I’d recommend reaching out to is this session’s guest, Casey Sharperson. In this conversation, she shares with us how she made the jump BEFORE the pandemic hit and how she’s already helping others do the same.

Listen in as Veronica and I find out what it means to take charge of your story and use it to your advantage to move forward.

Enjoy!

millennials and gen z

Chris Tuff – Millennials and Gen Z in the Workplace: What to Expect in a Post Pandemic World (AoL 174)

Here it is 2020, and a good part of the population scratches their head when the subject of Millennials and Gen Z comes up. With the pandemic completely changing how things are done in the working world for the foreseeable future, it would seem that these generations are going to be the ones left picking up the pieces and reassembling the economy in their own way.

So what exactly does that look like? For the most part, we know what it looks like for entrepreneurs. But the usual 9 to 5 world is going to change drastically in the next 5 to 10 years. Like after 9/11, when we were all about ramping up security, are we going to now see a continued uptick in technology use specifically geared towards maintaining healthy workplaces? How will this change the workplace overall? Will things ever go back to “normal”?

These are some of the questions Veronica and I ask this session’s guest, Chris Tuff, author of the book The Millennial Whisperer.

If you’ve not heard Chris before and you’re into futurism, I think you’ll really enjoy this chat.

  • When did Chris choose to get into marketing as his career? 16:20
  • How is Chris working with leaders to reshape their internal company structures to engage with Millennials? 26:44
  • What does Chris see in the future when it comes to technology playing an ever increasing role in daily work life? 31:47
  • According to Chris, what’s Shawshanking and what is its role? 36:20
  • What other technology does he see playing a role in Millennial’s lives in the not too distant future? 39:07
  • Besides writing another book, what else is Chris looking forward to doing in 2020 as we move through the pandemic? 42:41
  • Which teachers and influencers have helped Chris get to where he’s at today? 47:16
  • What’s the biggest plot twist he’s seen in his day to day life? 49:14

economic crisis

John Miles – Virtually Assisting VA’s in Economic Crisis – How Optimate and iWorker Aid Talent in Distress (AoL 170)

With the coronavirus outbreak, working remotely is starting to become a normal trend. In fact, I’d say it’s moved the timeline up by 5 years or more until we see a lot more remote workers. However, not all virtual workers are from first world countries where being able to work remotely is considered a perk. Instead, they reside in countries where they might be in the middle of long term economic crisis. They have learned how to become virtual assistants or VA’s so that they can bring in money than they’d get paid in their home country.

To help those folks, today’s guest, John Miles, and his partners at iWorker and Optimate, have built a network of VA’s around the globe. These aren’t just any VA’s, though. They are VA’s who actually are usually more than capable to handle what us solopreneurs would throw at them. In fact, a lot of them have degrees in the work that they do.

In this interview with John, we find out why he and his partners felt they needed to start down this path and who might benefit from hiring from those in the network.

Enjoy!

SPECIFICALLY, YOU’LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT:

  • What’s John’s history in business and as an entrepreneur before starting iWorker and Optimate? 9:48
  • What are some questions people need to consider before they bring on a VA or hire locally? 23:22
  • Due to what his various brands do as social enterprises, has John considering making them B-Corp’s? 31:19
  • Which countries are iWorker and Optimate targeting in finding VAs to work with? 35:44
  • How can people support what John and his co-founders are up to without hiring a VA? 38:09
  • Is there anything exciting for John coming up in 2020? 43:30
  • Who are three influencers he follows regularly? 44:48
  • Who would be someone John would get starstruck by interviewing? 47:19
  • What new habit has recently improved his life? 47:40
  • What costs less than $100 that has changed John’s life? 48:39
  • Is there something he believed when he was 18 but doesn’t today? 49:14

vision and mission

Climb Your Mountain: How to Develop Your Own Vision and Mission

I’ve been having a lot of meaningful conversations with new members of the Junto. And it seems like a lot of us who ARE mission driven are because at some point in our working career we asked “Is this all there is to life? Working in the same cubical each day? The same factory? Same ol’ town?”

The truth is that it doesn’t have to be this way.

This post (originally posted on July 20th, 2012) answers this specific question. I felt it needed a good polish!

So guys, I saw this post submitted by svrtngr on reddit

“Long story short, I got a full time job through a temp agency. The contract is for six months with the option to be kept on beyond that. At first I was really happy to have a job, but now I feel weird. Odd.

Is this it? Work full-time in a cubicle for long hours and get home too tired to do anything else for fifty/sixty years until you can “retire”?Because I’m not sure if I can handle it. Where does the fun and excitement come from? What else is there?”

Your Mission is Everything

Originally, this post made me upset. The one thing about reddit is that it’s completely anonymous. The advice that he was getting was generalized stuff we’ve all heard before. “You need to get out more and find out what makes you come alive and do that.”

That’s… helpful. But it’s pretty vague.

I personally thought he needed more help. Specifically he needed to work on finding his vision by working on his clarity.

Your Vision leads to Your Mission

I remember when I was in grad school, I realized that not everyone wants to be on top of the same mountain that I wanted to be on top of. At that same time, I realized that not everyone has the desire to climb their own mountain in the first place.

This realization blew me away.

From early on in life, I always knew that I wanted to do something that made an impact for other people through technology.

I just wasn’t sure how I was going to do that. That’s what I hoping to learn in college.

What I learned there, however, is what I didn’t want to do! I wasn’t going to make it as a typical 9 to 5’er. My internal clock doesn’t work that way and I always found my mind wandering anytime I was in a job.

Likewise, svrtngr needed to start from the beginning too.

His first step should be figuring out what he likes to do and learn about. After which, he can build his life and work around the life he sees for himself.

In short, he needs to assess what his Passions and Purpose are. From there, he can devise a Plan and Process.

Our vision is derived from our passion (interests) and purpose (where we fit in the world). We can determine our vision once we figure these other two things out.

From there, you devise a some early goals and and take dumb action. During this initial action sequence, it’s your job to find out what works and what doesn’t.

After repetitive attempts,  that’s where you can start to systematize and define your process!

Don’t Forget About Generational Patterns and the First Agreement

In previous writings, I wrote about the millennial generation being called the “lost generation”. If you believe in the Strauss-Howe Generational Theory, then you’d believe that this generation is the next Hero Generation.

Here’s a bit of an explanation of this theory:

Kind of a disconnect there between those two names, right? One name sounds pretty passive while the other one is getting to work and does what needs to be done.

The reason that many people become part of this particular lost generation is that they’ve been told what they need to do with their lives from day 1. They have allowed the world to program them. They’ve never programmed themselves.

A good part of one of my all time favorite books, The Four Agreements, talks about being yourself. Actually it says, Be Impeccable With Your Word. Essentially, what it’s saying is we need to learn how to be ourselves.

Any actions we are doing is because of who we are. Not because of what the world programs us to be.

What does this mean in real talk?

It means that if we are constantly playing any sort of victim card – from “Oh, I live in a small town so I can’t do big business” to “I’m a certain color of skin, the world is against me.” then you’re probably right.

With that mentality, David Anderson says while it make us feel good in the moment, it will never allow us to amount to much. This mentality will keep us down as long as we continue to let it to.

So let it out and let it go.

Action Steps

So, guys. In essence, how can you get started on your way of doing what you’re supposed to be doing?

First thing – give yourself permission to be great. Cause if you can’t do that, you won’t be. Next, figure out what you like to do in this world. Figure out how you can use it to add value to others.

Next, plan on how you’re going to do that. For me, I really love pulling people out of the Matrix and helping them become better at helping others. How are you going to help people with your skills and interests? (If you think your skills and interests aren’t monetizable – they are. Remember that some of the biggest YouTubers are video game players!)

And then from there, just fine tune what you offer to what the market wants. Not what you’re about – but if there’s a pain, solve the pain for people if you can.

If you guys need additional help with any of this process, I’m going to be releasing an upcoming resource in the Junto: Finding Your Personal Mission: A Quick Guide to Inner Fulfillment. At least right now that’s the running title. In it, I’ll have 27 questions to help you find your passions, purpose, and a potential process – 9 questions for each.

When it’s done, I’ll have it in there as a resource.

Also, as you might know I’m a John Maxwell fan. He wrote a book called Put Your Dream to the Test: 10 Questions to Help You See It and Seize It. I can’t recommend this book enough. I always suggest this to all my past students and clients struggling with connecting their dreams and businesses.

Anyhow, I hope this helps! You got this guys!

why am i here

David Anderson – Why Am I Here? – Why Discovering Your Personal Mission is Vital to Living a Purpose Driven Life (AoL 092)

Why am I here? That’s a question that a lot of people have asked themselves over the years. And because success looks different to different people, you might not not be able to recognize it if your career involved just formal education and getting a job upon graduation. In fact, if you’ve gone that traditional route, you might believe that those who have the most money or the most fame might be considered the most successful.

I believe that this model simply doesn’t fit in today’s new world. Sure, I might say that a majority of people still believe that to be considered successful, it just happens to you – but I and many other creators would say that success comes with achieving what you set out to do – whatever that might look like.

Today’s guest, David Anderson, is the co-author of the book The Delusion of Passion: Why Millennials Struggle with Success.

This book might sound familiar because Laila and I had the opportunity to speak with Mark Nathan about book back in session 23. It was also the book that “I helped re-publish” last year.

For me, a lot of things have changed since then – including learning how to really launch books and courses – but one thing stayed constant: I still hadn’t met the “other” co-author of the book.

Then I found out that he did a TEDx talk.

As I watched his presentation and got the chance to know jim, I realized why Mark had chosen him to help him write the book. He really is an impressive guy. He’s seems to have accomplished everything that he’s wanted to do – and through his own experiences, he really has a lot to teach others.

In this chat with David, Albert and I find out more about his mindset he used to land a job at the White House, how the entire process of writing the book with Mark went, how he got into international trading, and much more. We even ask him questions you guys submitted about finding one’s own mission.

If you’re a fan of the Delusion of Passion, or simply want to get to hear more about what it takes to really achieve your dreams – this session is for you.

Thanks for listening, and enjoy the show!

Sabah Ali: The Double Major Entrepreneur – How to Combine College Life and Business Achievement (AoL 083)

College can mean different experiences to different people.

For me, I lived two lives. One, when I was an undergrad, where I was studying all the time and worrying about why I sucked so bad at taking tests and feeling like I had to plagiarize just to pass my classes. I never felt comfortable in my own skin, let alone think about doing anything extracurricular.

And then, in grad school, things changed dramatically. I was suddenly forced into the front of the class – 6 times a week – and found myself in all kinds of clubs.

This had a profound effect on my perspective of life and I finally started emerging from my shell.

But that was just my take on college.

Some people go into college knowing precisely what they want to do. They also have a mission to do as well. Laila’s story was like that as we’ve come to learn. So is today’s guest, Sabah Ali.

Sabah is simply crushing her college career. Not only is she double majoring (yeah, that’s hard enough right there!) but she’s finding time to do a ton of extracurriculars. Writing and publishing a bestselling book. Starting a podcast. And even going to various conferences with mentors and various connections.

In this session’s chat, we find out more about this path of hers. Where the inspiration for the book and podcast came from, and how she’s successfully balancing everything.

Alexis Parris: Doing What’s Important but Not Expected – How to Find the Education You Really Need (AoL 074)

The world crafts us to be a certain way, there’s no doubt about it.

To this day, most formal education teaches us to be employees.

However, there’s some formal education out there that teaches to our strengths.

But many times, those places are really hard to get into because of the highly custom work they do.

Today’s guest, Alexis Parris, worked hard enough in her craft of dancing to get into one of those schools.

However, she soon learned that while she was good, if not great, at dancing, she had work to do that she really wanted to help people with.

Finding their true gifts themselves.

In this session, Daniel Postma and I chat with Alexis to find out more about her path, including why she left her amazing dancing career to pursue her new dreams, how she’s been able to get great mentors in her life, and what she truly believes that personal development means and why it’s so important.

As always, thanks for listening, and enjoy the show!
